The urban development designed at the end of the nineteenth century between Chaussée de Waterloo, Chaussée d’Alsemberg and Avenue Ducpétiaux is extraordinarily rich in terms of architecture and planning. Saint-Gilles Town Hall, with its extremely refined decoration, occupies the centre of a huge plot, which is closed off at its southern end by the spectacular, elongated, Tudor-style facade of Saint-Gilles prison. Striking perspectives promote this monumental heritage and the groups of facades, which range from tradition to modernity, offer a selection of the best designs of their periods.
